Light Rail Options for Newcastle

A local company GHD, has been tasked with the scoping studies to provide advice on the delivery of the light rail network to Newcastle. There are a number of views as to the route of the light rail network including linking the beaches to the CBD. This study will assist with the identifying the most suitable transport interchange for the network along with route options.

With this study under way for the Newcastle light rail network some may be surprised that Wickham is not the only option being considered. Transport minister, Ms Berejiklian confirmed a recent planning workshop in Newcastle had examined options ‘‘including Wickham, Hamilton and Broadmeadow’’ as the possible locations for the transport interchange.

This news will be met with mixed feelings in the community with some believing that Hamilton could be Newcastle's primary interchange as it connects both the Sydney and Hunter rail networks. Space may be one of the hardest aspects of this option unless the platform is relocated to the other side of Beaumont St.
